Dr. Brad Maguth is an award-winning researcher and tenured Professor inside the LeBron James Family Foundation School of Education at The University of Akron. He also serves as the University's Director of the H.K. Barker Center for Economic Education, which is a partnership of leaders from the business and education communities dedicated to promoting economic literacy in classrooms and communities. In 2018, Dr. Maguth was elected by membership President of the Ohio Council for the Social Studies, the state's largest professional association dedicated to the advancement of history and social studies education.
Outside of receiving his doctorate in Social Studies and Global Education at The Ohio State University and earning his Master's degree in Social Studies Education at Teachers College: Columbia University in New York City, Brad has conducted research and studied at The London School of Economics and Political Science in England and the Chinese Academy of Agriculture in Beijing, China. He has been awarded faculty scholar appointments at Henan University (China), Hiroshima University (Japan), and with the International March of the Living.
Dr. Maguth’s scholarly record includes serving as author and editor on publications that explore social studies and global education research from around the world. Most recently, Brad was selected to lead one of the nation's premier book series, Research in Social Education, published through Information Age Press. His most recently published title, Inquiry-Based Global Learning in K-12 Social Studies, (Routledge) includes content from 24 different countries embedded within inquiry-oriented instructional units that promote global perspectives. In 2022, the National Council for the Social Studies announced its selection of Dr. Maguth for its Global Scholar Award. The award, named in honor of James Becker, perceived by many as the father of global education in the U.S., recognizes the professional achievements and contributions of a distinguished individual that has devoted their life to creating a better world through their work (Tucker, 2018).
Brad has presented his scholarship at a host of international and national conferences, as well as published in numerous reputable peer-reviewed journals. Outside of serving as a keynote and featured speaker, he has successfully facilitated educator professional development workshops in social studies education, global education, technology, and innovation in curricular planning in the USA, Canada, the European Union, and the People’s Republic of China. In the area of teacher education, Dr. Maguth and his team have won praise and over a million dollars in grant funding for their conceptualized “lived-in” model to teacher preparation that embeds university teacher education in area schools to teach, tutor, and mentor academically vulnerable youth. Brad has worked in advisory capacities with the LeBron James Family Foundation, Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, the Council for Economic Education, and a host of school districts, universities, and businesses. Brad and his spouse reside in Northeast Ohio with their beloved dog Fisher.
