Dr. Brad Maguth is an award-winning researcher and tenured educator with an Associate Professor appointment inside the Department of Curricular and Instructional Studies, in the LeBron James Family Foundation College of Education at The University of Akron. He is the President of the Ohio Council for the Social Studies, the state's largest professional association dedicated to the advancement of history and social studies education. He also serves as the University's Director of the H.K. Barker Center for Economic Education, which is a partnership of leaders from the education and business communities dedicated to promoting economic literacy in classrooms.
Outside of receiving his doctorate in Social Studies and Global Education at The Ohio State University and earning his Master's degree in Social Studies Education at Teachers College: Columbia University in New York City, Brad has conducted research and studied at The London School of Economics and Political Science in England and at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Beijing, China. Dr. Maguth’s scholarly record includes serving as lead editor on textbooks that explore research in social studies and global education from around the world. Most recently, Brad was selected to serve as editor for the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), the largest professional association in the country devoted solely to social studies education, in the development of its soon to be released book "Global Learning Based on the College, Career, and Civic Framework in Social Studies". This project includes content from 24 different countries and captures inquiry-oriented Pk-12 instructional units that advance global learning.
Dr. Maguth is co-editor of The State of Global Education: Learning with the World published through Routledge Press (2015) which explores ways in which educators can teach with, about, and for the world. This title has been adopted for use at universities and classrooms around the world. Brad has presented his scholarship at a host of international and national conferences, as well as published his research in numerous reputable peer-reviewed journals. Outside of serving as a keynote and featured speaker, he has successfully facilitated educator professional development workshops in the areas of social studies education, global education, technology, and innovation in curricular planning and instruction in the U.S., Canada, European Union, and the People’s Republic of China. Also, Dr. Maguth and his team have won praise and awards for their nationally acclaimed, innovative “lived-in” model to teacher preparation which embeds university teacher preparation in area schools in order to teach, tutor, and mentor high need youth. Brad currently works in advisory capacities with the LeBron James Family Foundation, Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, and a host of area schools districts and organizations. Brad and his partner reside in Seven Hills, Ohio with their beloved dog Parker.
